Soma Fog Cutter demo bike

This new offering from Soma blends the best features of the Smoothie road bike and the Double cross disc into a versatile Road Disc package with generous tyre clearance. We recently received a frameset courtesy of Soma fabrications to build up. We’ve kept it more road–centric than a lot of our Wolverine builds as the carbon fork and tighter geometry are screaming out for a build that is both fast and comfortable for all day rides.

The frame comes equipped with some very nice features. The seat stays curve nicely into the chainstays. Whist this is aesthetically pleasing it also gifts a functionality to mechanics trying to access the disc brakes for a quick tweak. It also has neat provisions for fenders on the chainstay and seatstay bridges. The carbon fork up front gives a confident point and shoot feel and helps keep the weight down.

The geometry is akin to many road endurance bikes, sporting a rather large headtube. I have been rather tame in trimming the headtube so that those larger than me can take it for a ride, but feel i could drop it a little more for sure.

Tyre clearance is impressive, we put a wheelset off a floor stock surly straggler the other day and found 41c Knards do fit. Whilst they do, I would argue this may cause toe overlap in smaller sizes and push the bounds of it’s intended purposes. For now the 33c Shikoro tyres are a blast and really don’t feel any slower than 25c tyres. The best part about the tyre clearance is suddenly your limitations of places to ride open up exponentially.

If you ride to work every day and want to get there quick but don’t have room for a weekend road bike this is a choice well worth considering.
