I was looking for a dog trailer that could handle a bikepacking trip. The only one I could find that rated as suitable for touring was a Burnley branded trailer.
It weighed best part of 20 kg and had only 16” wheels with a load rating of mid 30kg.
The Carry Freedom Y Large has 20” wheels with quick release axles for convenience. It weighs only 8.4 kg and is load rates to 90kg.
Even after buying a lightweight dog carrier it was still $250 cheaper than the Burnley plus a lot more flexible.
It tows extremely well. The hitch is very flexible and the bike can fall over without damaging the hitch.
Surprisingly it’s reasonably easy to ride with a large load because unlike panniers you are not fighting the weight of the load all the time so you can get out of the saddle and really rock the bike on a good ascent.
It’s German designed and of a very high build quality.
It has many accessories for carrying even long loads such as canoes and surf boards.
It is also expedition rated according to their website.
I’ve carried a shopping load of food for 3 people for a week plus other household shopping and it wasn’t as tough going as I expected.
A remarkable product.
If it’s just a cargo trailer or a pet trailer you are shopping for that can handle a decent load and more than just a quick ride to the park I highly recommend you consider this before you buy.
